Problem
A BESS/EMS deployment spanning PCS, battery, HVAC, fire suppression, metering and STS subsystems had no shared vocabulary. Every vendor named the same measurement differently, device IDs were duplicated between MQTT topics and JSON bodies, and inconsistent topic depth broke wildcard subscriptions.
Solution
Built a canonical signal architecture across a registry of ~677 signals — snake_case in MySQL, SunSpec-aligned paths in IoTDB, versioned MQTT topics — with SunSpec used as a trimmed semantic overlay rather than a strict compliance target. Plus ems-edge, a Python edge agent on Kunbus RevPi that normalises heterogeneous device telemetry before publish, significantly reducing bandwidth overhead.
Zynxpower PCU
Problem
An energy storage OEM needed reliable telemetry from power control units running on constrained hardware over unstable cellular connections, where standard QoS 1 MQTT publishes were backing up and dropping data during outages.
Solution
Implemented a store-and-forward telemetry firmware architecture. We decoupled the sampling loop from the publish loop, writing a 498-signal catalogue to a local SQLite ring buffer. When the cellular modem drops, the agent batches historical data and replays it sequentially upon reconnection, successfully eliminating data loss across LTE dropouts.
